Arpeggios…
By Ernesto | April 15, 2008
In a previous post I mentioned having to really know you’re arpeggios. The first thing I did which really helped me out was to figure out the fingerings for all the inversions. Once you have the shapes under your fingers, everything else becomes a lot easier.
So I took the four basic chord types: maj7, m7, dom7 and m7b5, and learned them all in C, starting from each note of the chord. Here are the fingerings for the Cmaj7 arpeggio, for example:
But that’s not all. There are still some alternative fingerings which are worth learning. After all, the idea is to be able to play an arpeggio anywhere on the fingerboard at any given time. Here are the rest of them:
And that’s just Cmaj7. I recommend focusing on those at first, then figure out the ones for Cm7 and work on those for a while. The goal is to have these memorized and to be able to play them with relative ease.
Once you have that down, we can move on to the next step…
